Africa50 - Project Development operates at the front end of the investment cycle. It works with governments, public authorities, sponsors, developers, lenders, investors and technical partners to originate, structure, de-risk and advance projects toward investment readiness and financial close.

Within Project Development, the Transport and ICT vertical focuses on transport, logistics and digital infrastructure, including roads, bridges, railways, ports, airports, urban mobility, e-mobility, logistics platforms, regional corridors, digital connectivity, data centres, telecommunications infrastructure, fibre networks and other ICT-enabled infrastructure, as well as infrastructure asset recycling.

Purpose of the Role

The Investment Analyst supports the Transport and ICT investment team by providing financial modelling, research, analysis and transaction execution support. The role contributes to the assessment and development of transport and ICT infrastructure opportunities and helps senior team members make sound investment decisions and advance projects toward bankability and financial close.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain project finance models under the guidance of senior team members, including cash flow projections, financing assumptions, returns, sensitivities and scenario analyses.
  • Analyse key transport and ICT project assumptions, including traffic or demand forecasts, tariffs, tolls, user fees or availability payments, capital expenditure, operating costs and financing structures.
  • Conduct sector, country, market, company, sponsor and policy research across transport and ICT subsectors such as roads, bridges, railways, ports, airports, logistics, urban mobility, e-mobility, digital connectivity, datacenters, other ICT-related infrastructure or infrastructure asset recycling.
  • Support the preliminary screening and evaluation of project development opportunities against Africa50's mandate, transport and ICT strategy, development impact objectives and risk-return requirements.
  • Support the structuring and execution of project development and equity investments, including PPPs, concessions, asset-recycling transactions and other public-private delivery models.
  • Assist with financial, commercial, technical, legal, tax and ESG due diligence by organising information, maintaining trackers and data rooms, reviewing adviser outputs and following up on outstanding items.
  • Review project and transaction documentation and summarise key commercial, financial and risk considerations for senior team members.
  • Prepare analyses, opportunity notes, screening materials, investment committee papers, presentations, term sheets and other project-related documents for internal and external audiences.
  • Support negotiations and stakeholder discussions with public authorities, sponsors, co-developers, contractors, operators, lenders, DFIs and other investors by preparing analyses and supporting materials.
  • Monitor project workplans, development budgets, adviser deliverables, approvals, conditions precedent and transaction timelines, and promptly highlight emerging issues.
  • Support the monitoring of approved projects and portfolio companies, including the collection and analysis of operational, financial and impact information.
  • Collaborate with Africa50's Legal, ESG, Finance, Risk and other investment teams and contribute to knowledge sharing, market intelligence and other team or corporate initiatives.

Candidate Profile 

  • One to three years of relevant professional experience in infrastructure project development, project finance, investment banking, transaction advisory, infrastructure private equity, a DFI, a transport/digital infrastructure operator or developer, or a related institution. Relevant internships may be considered as part of the experience assessment.
  • Exposure to infrastructure or transport and/or ICT-related transactions, financial analysis, valuation, due diligence or project development is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, business, engineering or another relevant discipline from a recognised university. A master's degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification is an advantage.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in African or other emerging markets is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills 
  • Strong quantitative, accounting and analytical skills, with a sound foundation in financial modelling and valuation.
  • Good understanding of corporate finance and project finance principles; knowledge of PPP and concession structures is an advantage.
  • Ability to analyse commercial and operational drivers of transport and/or ICT infrastructure projects and translate assumptions into clear financial analysis.
  • Strong research skills and the ability to synthesis complex information into concise, decision-oriented materials.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and quality.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to manage several tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced transaction environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Fluency in French is highly desirable; Portuguese or another relevant African language is an advantage.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong proficiency in PowerPoint and Word.

Location

The position will be based in Casablanca, Morocco, and will require travel across Africa and internationally as needed.
